Throwback Thursday: Sylvie Vartan

sylvie2

Today we’re brining back one of the originators of the French yé-yé movement: Sylvie Vartan. On a recent trip to Paris, a cafe in Le Marais was playing loads of 60s French Pop and when Vartan came through the speakers I started to really listen.

Later I learned that along with other French singers, like Serge Gainsbourg and Françoise Hardy, Vartan helped define the yé-yé movement. Derived from the English term “yeah! yeah!” (popularized by British rock bands from the same time) yé-yé swept across Southern Europe throughout the 60s. Vartan brought a style all her own with her tough-sounding voice and girl-next-door charisma.

Check out a few of my favorite Sylvie Vartan tracks below and if you like what you hear, you should have a listen to the re-release Vartan album Irresistible Sylvie.
